Do you know that the renowned footballer, Wayne Rooney once said,”I love Football and Football is my life?”

This statement resonated deep within me, and made me come to the realization that I also feel the same way about football. This is the main reason I’m writing about it today.

I am a young woman who grew up with an uncle and elder brothers. Back then, when other families watched other shows, all we ever did was watch football, so it was natural for me to develop an interest in it, then the interest blossomed and turned into a deep affection for me.

Now, follow me as I show you why I love football so dearly.

Why I choose Football

Football is a game in which two teams, consisting of eleven players each make use of any part of their body except their hands and arms to play ball. They must also try to score in the opponent’s net.

One of the rules of football is only the goalkeeper can hold the ball in his hands, and he may only do so within the penalty region, also known as the box.

Football is the most watched and popular game in the world of sports when we talk about spectators. It has billions of viewers worldwide.

Football can be played anywhere; parks, fields, schools, and so on as long as there’s a space to play on and some important equipment to play with. Equipment like football, soccer boots, jerseys and so many more.

History Of Football

Football originated in Great Britain, in the 19th Century. The game was played locally until it became standard, when it was taken up to be a winter game played in public boarding schools. Football is also referred to as soccer.

The Association of football was formed in 1863, and after some years, it was changed to Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). This association made the rules of the game.

There are so many leagues, and trophies to win in football. It ranges from English Premier league to Champions league, from the FA cup, to the Community Shield, and many more, but the greatest football tournament is the WORLD CUP.

The World Cup is a football competition between several countries. It is played every four years. It is the most popular sporting activity because it draws different viewers from different parts of the country and the world in general.

The first World Cup took place in Uruguay in the year 1930 with 13 countries in the tournament. Since then, the world cup has been played every four years, with the exception of the years, 1942 and 1946 because of the world war II.

So far, 22 World Cup tournaments have been played with different countries hosting the games. The home team, that is the host country always has the privilege of playing the first game of the tournament. Opening and closing ceremonies are done on the first and last match of the tournament.

Brazil happens to be the country with the highest hosts and wins in the history of World cup, five trophies. They are llowed closely by Italy, 4 times hosting the cup and winning it. Argentina is next with three hosts and wins, followed by Uruguay and other countries like Portugal, France, Spain and the likes.

Greatest Player Of All Time

There have been a lot of controversy about who the greatest football player is. However, I would proudly choose CHRISTIANO RONALDO over and over again as my favorite footballer and greatest of all time (GOAT).

Christiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro is a Portuguese professional football player. He was born on the 5th of February, 1985. He plays forward and captains both his Saudi Arabia league club, Al Nassr, and also his National team, Portugal.

Ronaldo has played a total of over 1200 games, scored 850 career goals and 34 trophies for his club and country, making him the highest goal scorer of all time. Ronaldo began his professional career with Sporting CP, thereafter, he signed with Manchester United in 2003.

It wasn’t until a few years after he became a Manchester United player that I knew him and watched as he played in the club. Ronaldo won the FA Cup in his first season with Manchester United, he also went ahead to win 3 consecutive Premier League trophies. He also won the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

When Ronaldo was 23 years old, he won his first Ballon d’or, an achievement like no other. He continued his career and transferred to real Madrid in 2009. He was signed for 94million Euros, making him the most expensive football player to be bought by a club then.

On getting to Real Madrid, he teamed up with some outstanding players there and won four Champion Leagues for his team. He also won 2 Balloon d’ors for himself, and came out as the top goal scorer.

In 2018, Ronaldo signed a contract and transferred to Juventus, where he won about 4 trophies. He became the most valuable player in Serie A, and thus, became the first footballer ever to finish as top scorer in the English, Spanish, and Italian Leagues. What an extraordinary feat for just one man!!

Christiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in 2021 and in 2023, he signed for Al Nassr club. Although, Ronaldo is getting old and people’s fear is that this might be his last days playing football, he still hasn’t stopped achieving some feats which makes him unstoppable.

Ronaldo was ranked the World’s highest paid athlete by Forbes in the years 2016, 2017 and 2023 respectively. He also ranked World’s most famous athlete by ESPN from the year 2016 to 2019. Time also included Christiano Ronaldo’s name on their list of most influential people in the world in 2014.

Ronaldo is the first ever footballer to earn 1billion US dollars in his career. Although, he has not won any World Cup for his country, one major point why him being the greatest player of all time is still debated by many people worldwide,

Ronaldo is an absolutely stunning and brilliant footballer which is why he is my favorite player in the history of football.

My Favorite Team

Although Manchester United has had its own fair share of ups and downs for the past few years, they remain a formidable team and a force to be reckoned with in English Premier League.

Established in 1878, Manchester United has been on for over 140 years. It was formerly known as Newton Health L&YR football club, until the year 1902, when the name was changed to it’s present name, Manchester United.

The club won its first English league title in 1908, and on February 19, 1910, the club moved to Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams, it’s current stadium. Manchester United has had phenomenal coaches who steered the team’s path to victory and success.

Few of them are Sir Alex Ferguson, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Erik Ten Hag and so on.

Since the beginning of the Premier League in the year 1992, Manchester United has been consistent in their growth, blessed with superb players such as Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, David Beckham, Christiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, to mention but a few.

The club has a long history of success to their name which includes 20 premier league titles, 3 Champion Leagues cups, 12 FA Cup trophies, and so many more making it a total of over 68 trophies that he club has won over these years.

The trophy cabinet, where all the trophies that have ever been won in the history of the club is placed cannot be compared to any team’s. It is a fantastic sight to behold!

Why I Love And Enjoy Watching Football

If we are to compare football to other sports, no sport comes close to it in the aspect of suspense. Football has an awesome way of keeping one on his or her toes. Talk about premium excitement for a whole 90 minutes or even more, talk about football. I love it!

Football relieves one’s stress, a remedy that helps one to forget the problems of one’s daily life temporarily, and it brings so many people together, which helps to build ones social skills and teaches one to show respect to others.

I vividly remember one World Cup like that, the whole community gathered to watch my country’s match against Argentina that wonderful evening, I got to meet a lot of people. I learnt how to relate to them and respect everyone, both old and young.

We talked, laughed and shouted together. It was very entertaining, and I would never forget those moments.

Finally, football is an healthy way for people to compete and showcase their talents. It teaches co-operation and team work. It also helps to build one’s self image which is positive and confident.

I could go on and on about why I love the sport so much but sorry, I’ve got to go, my team’s match starts in five minutes!
