In 2022, Samsung Electronics generated a revenue of roughly 234 billion US dollars, most of which came from its mobile communication segment.

Here is the story of how Samsung changed my outlook of the whole world in general. Follow me as I lead you into the world of this global giant.

The Birth Of Samsung: Journey Of Innovation And Success

Remember when we all wanted to be associated with Iphones, when Iphones are synonymous to being in vogue; that was the begining of my journey. Everyone wants to be associated with attractive things, but not all that glitters is gold.

I had just concluded my final college examinations and anticipated getting an iphone for myself, the latest one at that, so I can belong to the league of the ‘ happening’ people.

With a determined look on my face, I visited a phone shop, the shop keeper, a kind old man enquired what I wanted . His eyes twinkled as he laughed out loud when I informed him of my quest.

Bewildered, I asked what was funny and he proceeded to tell me a story. He called it the story of Samsung from humble beginnings to global dominance.

History Of Samsung

Samsung was founded on March 1, 1938 by Lee Byung-chul as a grocery store. Born of poor farmers, he spent his childhood on the farm tending the family cows and pigs.

He established a business in Daegu, South Korea, where he traded noodles and other goods produced in the city and surrounding area and exported them to China and the region. (The company name, Samsung, is of Korean origin and means “three stars.”)

After the Korean War, Lee expanded into textiles and established South Korea’s largest wool spinning mill. He focused on industrialization, with the goal of helping the country rebuild after the war.

During this time, his company benefited from the South Korean government’s new protectionist policies. This policy was aimed at protecting the country’s large zaibatsu (zaibatsu) from competition and supporting them by providing easy financing.

In the late 1950s, the company acquired three of South Korea’s largest commercial banks, an insurance company, and a cement and fertilizer producing company. Samsung acquired other insurance companies during his 1960s, as well as an oil refinery, a nylon company, and a department store.

In the 1970s, the company expanded its textile manufacturing process to cover the entire production line from raw materials to finished products in order to increase its competitiveness in the textile industry.

New subsidiaries were established, including Samsung Heavy Industries, Samsung Shipbuilding, and Samsung Precision Company (Samsung Techwin).

Also, around the same time, the company started investing in the heavy chemical and petrochemical industries, giving the company a promising growth trajectory.

Amazed, I emphatically asked if all these were true and he answered in the affirmative. He went further to inform me that under Lee’s leadership, Samsung went from a small trading company to a global conglomerate with over 300,000 employees.

Investing heavily in research and development, Samsung has consistently been at the forefront of new technology and revolutionized industries such as semiconductors and mobile devices industries.

The small firm that started from a little boy’s dream is now known for it’s innovative products and services, including smartphones, TVs, electronics, finance, engineering, construction, trading, investment, fashion , resort business, and home appliances.

Lee Byung-Chul’s Legacy

Lee’s legacy goes far beyond Samsung – he is widely regarded as one of Korea’s greatest entrepreneurs and a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Samsung has also made significant contributions to the arts and culture, including the Samsung Museum of Art and numerous philanthropic initiative.

It is also dedicated to improving global healthcare through the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul and partnerships with leading medical institutions around the world.

Unique Features Of Samsung

Here areb the unique features you need to know. They include:

Taking Selfie With Voice Or Hand Gesture

Whether we like it or not, selfies are now a part of our daily lives. Whether he takes 50 photos a day or he takes one for Christmas like I do, Samsung phones offer a great way to make your selfies more versatile.

To enable selfie gestures on your Galaxy;

  • Open the Camera app and tap the settings cog in the top left corner.
  • Scroll down and tap “Shooting method”.
  • Then tap the switch next to “Voice Commands” and “Show Palm.”
  • You can now release the shutter by saying “smile,” “cheese,” “shot,” or “shot.” This works for both front and rear cameras.
  • To take a selfie or video using gestures, press and hold your palm toward the front camera, or say “Record video.”

Create A Secure Folder To Keep Stuff Private

Did you know that Samsung phones have their own secret vault, known as the Secure Folder? It’s a sort of second space where you can either move files or apps from your “main” phone space, or just use as its own private area.

It’s recommended moving all banking apps to a secure folder as it provides an extra layer of security in case your phone is left unattended. It can also be used to store secret things that you would be embarrassed to let others see.

Mute Calls Or Alarm With A Flip

Are you tired of your alarm clock waking you up exactly when you want it? If you don’t want to fumble around in the dark to turn off your alarm, you can turn it off by simply flipping your phone or waving your hand over the screen.

This also works for incoming calls, as it mutes them instead of canceling them.

Use The Inbuilt Scan Document

In fact, scanning documents on your Samsung phone or tablet may be easier than using a real scanner, as all you have to do is use your device’s built-in camera app.

Lock Your Homescreen Layout

If you often accidentally move carefully placed icons on your homescreen, there’s an easy way to stop it. You can lock your home screen. You cannot delete or move the app until you unlock it again.

Get Camera To Flash For Notifications

In the Settings menu, you can choose to turn on your camera’s flash or display when you receive a notification or an alarm goes off. This feature is perfect if you can’t hear your phone or don’t want your phone to vibrate for some reason.

Customize Side Key Shortcut

Customizing the side buttons on your Samsung device lets you set up new functions and shortcuts in addition to the standard controls.

This is a great way to use your phone more easily and quickly, as you can assign frequently used functions to buttons for quick access. For example, you can set a button to immediately launch the camera when you press the button twice.

This feature also allows you to open the app of your choice, giving you access to the apps you use most with just a few clicks.

Conclusion

The extraordinary journey of the founder of Samsung holds valuable lessons for our day to day activities. His Humility, perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit led to the birth of Samsung.

Through his story, I have learnt that my background doesn’t mean my back should be on the ground. Rather, it should be a stepping stone for me to have a better future. It should be the same as well for you.
